Mac Media Solution

This is a bit of a departure from the "photo" blog but I was working on this for a client and this is my recommended setup. Can work for up to two TV's but more AppleTV's could be added later. I know there are people out there that will argue Plex or Boxee should be installed but as far as ease of use goes iTunes and AppleTV cannot be beat.

Mac Media Solution

Hardware

MacMini - http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC238LL/A?mco=MTM3NTAwOTE
Base model will work OK we will store media elsewhere

External Storage - http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/
I prefer the form factor of the mini stack and the built in hub is a plus. I would buy two, one for files one for backup (Time Machine or clone depends on you)

AppleTV - http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/apple_tv?mco=MTAyNTQzMjU
By far the best gui for viewing on a TV

Software

ElGato - http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ElGato/10020258/
ElGato is not necessary if you already have a DVR but the Turbo 264.hd makes AppleTV formatted movies from a ripped DVD or downloaded torrent at about 100fps

RipitApp - http://ripitapp.com/ ripping dvd's

HandBrake - http://handbrake.fr/

IDentify - http://identifyapp.wordpress.com/ for meta tagging the ripped movies

VLC - http://www.videolan.org/ needed for HandBrake

Transmission - http://www.transmissionbt.com/ BitTorrent Client
